Captain III
Captain Hendley Hawkins was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, by his wonderful parents Hendley, Sr and Lucy Hawkins. Captain Hawkins graduated from Crenshaw High School in 1983, upon graduation from high school Captain Hawkins received a football scholarship from the University of Nebraska. Captain Hawkins was a three-year varsity letter winner and played in two Sugar Bowls and one Fiesta Bowl. Captain Hawkins was an eleventh-round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns, unfortunately, a leg injury terminated his professional football dreams.
Captain Hawkins began his law enforcement career at Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Department (MTAPD), in December of 1994. He then joined the Los Angeles Police Department on November 27, 1997, as part of bifurcated merger of the MTAPD into the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Upon the amalgamation into the Los Angeles Police Department, Captain Hawkins worked as a patrol officer in Transit Rail & Bus Division and Southwest Division. While at Southwest Division Captain Hawkins worked various assignments: Field Training Officer, Community Relations Officer and Senior Lead Officer, this afforded Captain Hawkins a chance to give back to the community that had given him so much growing up.
In 2008, Captain Hawkins was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to 77th Street Division, where he was assigned to patrol as a field supervisor. After eight months in the field Captain Hawkins was quickly moved into the Crime Intelligence/Strategy Unit and then became the adjutant for the Area Commanding Officer. Captain Hawkins was upgraded to Sergeant II in 2013 and worked as the Assistant Watch Commander at South Traffic Division. In 2015, Captain Hawkins was assigned to Internal Affairs Group. Simultaneously, while working as a sergeant, Captain Hawkins returned to college where he earned his master’s degree in Business Administration at American Intercontinental University, Chicago Illinois.
In 2017, Captain Hawkins was promoted to Lieutenant and was assigned to Southeast Division as a patrol watch commander. In 2020, Captain Hawkins became the Commanding Officer of Southeast Detective Division, where he remained until his promotion to captain in July 2021.
Captain Hawkins was honored to be promoted to the rank of Captain by Chief of Police, Michael R. Moore in 2021 and assigned as the 77th Patrol Division Commanding Officer. On October 23, 2022 Captain Hawkins was assigned to Southwest where he was the Patrol Commanding Officer. Captain Hawkins is currently the Commanding Officer of Central Traffic Division.
Captain Hawkins is a member of International Association of Chiefs of Police, Oscar Joel Bryant Foundation, National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the Los Angeles Women Police Officers and Associates.
Captain Hawkins is the proud father of Brandon, Bryon, Brie-Jaylin and Aiden.
