US Dept. of Education Recognition

The Los Angeles Unified and Manhattan Beach Unified school districts were honored by the U.S. Department of Education on Friday — Earth Day — for their efforts to reduce negative environmental impacts.

The two districts were among five California entities so honored. LAUSD’s efforts to incorporate sustainability into students’ education helped earn the honor.

On Earth Day Ann Street Elementary presented this mural to the community. The mural was painted by Hilton Alves, who is the artist behind the International Mural Project called 101 Perfect Waves

CouncilMember Gilbert A. Cedillo joined LAPD and youth from the community on this day where the kids gave the final touches to the mural, and Hilton signed it.

“I congratulate these schools, districts and postsecondary institutions for their commitment to sustainable facilities, health and classroom practices,” said U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr.
