The Watts Gang Task Force Public Safety Committee was established as a multi-disciplinary approach to partnership.

While the Watts Gang Task Force has been recognized and honored for its numerous accomplishments, its core mission continues to be stopping the violence. It has served as a model all over the city and beyond. There is still work to be done, but the progress seen in Watts over the past three and a half years is proof that, working together, we can combat gang violence.

Originally started in 1991. The Housing Based Day Supervision Program (HBDS) staff accompanies the youth of Imperial Courts and Nickerson Gardens to the UCLA campus. The youth range from 8-17 years. Each youth is assigned to a UCLA student and is mentored throughout the quarter. The program allows the youth to explore the possibilitties of attending a 4 year university. At UCLA, the youth are assisted with homework, fed and then spend time with their tutors doing recreational activities.

The tutors not only help the students academically but also emotionally. The officers work closely with the tutors to ensure that the Jordan Downs' students benefit from this successful program.

Operation Progress, or “OP,” was founded by LAPD officers in the Southeast Division who work with the city’s most at-risk youth in the South Central Los Angeles community of Watts. As a team, these officers are dedicated to empowering youth through personal mentoring and scholarship assistance. OP has grown into a “network of opportunity,” guiding students through life’s challenges, from elementary school through college graduation. The effectiveness of OP is the result of LAPD mentoring, partnerships with local private schools, after-school providers, and college preparedness programs.

STARBASE

The DoD STARBASE Program first originated in Detroit, Michigan as Project STARS in 1991. The curriculum, designed by Barbara Koscak and Rick Simms, focused on exposing at-risk youth, (4-6 grade) to innovative hands-on activities in science, technology and mathematics based on the physics of flight. Under the guidance of Brig. Gen. David Arendts, 127th wing commander at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, students were invited to Selfridge to participate and witness the application of scientific concepts in a “real world” setting. National Guard personnel demonstrated the use of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology in their fields of expertise and served as role models to the attending students.
